On December 6th the Embassy of Poland in Stockholm – NATO Contact Point Embassy in Sweden – in cooperation with the Atlantic Council hosted a seminar “NATO at 70: How to Navigate in a Turbulent World”.

The key-note speech was delivered by James Appathurai, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy and NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The panelists touched upon the main challanges, including meaning of the transatlantic relations. They agreed that the US engagement remains key for maintaining NATO’s credibility. They pointed out challenges on the Eastern as well as Southern flank. Another topic discussed was development of the European security in the context of membership of many EU countries to the Alliance. The focus was also put on challenges related to financing defence and security expenses in the Member States.

The panelists highlighted a complex range of extraeuropean challenges NATO is facing. They underlined that a special attention should be paid to hybrid threats and terrorism.

The seminar was attended by 50 experts representing various institutions: Swedish governmental administration, diplomatic corps, thin-tanks and NATO HQ.

The seminar was the last event organized by the Embassy of Poland in Stockholm in its capacity of the NATO Contact Point Embassy. After four years of fulfilling those duties the Contact Point will be moved – as of 1 January 2019 – to the British Embassy in Stockholm.
